Leptospirosis cases in Bacolod up by 200%

Cases of leptospirosis in highly-urbanized Bacolod City increased by 200 percent from March 29 to April 4, with three probable deaths.

The City Health Office recorded 12 cases of leptospirosis during the compared to four cases, with one death, in the same period last year.

Two cases were recorded in Barangay Estefania, and one each in Mandalagan, Sum-ag, Taculing, Singcang, Felisa, Banago, 10, 13, 16 and 39.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by the bacterium leptospira that can be found in contaminated water or soil.

Without treatment, leptospirosis in people can lead to kidney damage, meningitis, liver failure, troubled breathing, and even death, according to the Department of Health.

On the other hand, CHO recorded a reduction of 54 percent in dengue cases for the same period.

Dengue cases dropped from 292 cases and two deaths in 2025 to only 134 cases with zero death this year.

Barangay Singcang-Airport has the highest number of dengue cases at 20. | GB
