FU in campus journ convention

May 29, 2023

According to Human Rights in ASEAN, being a journalist has always been complex. Many journalists work long hours, travel long distances, and wade through risky terrain and situations to acquire a scoop. This is not to mention the uncertainty that comes with the media landscape’s unpredictability. But, being a journalist here is extra challenging. Some Filipino journalists endure the elements and are exposed to harm, and even death, for reporting the truth.

The arrogance of unconscious bias

May 29, 2023

At some point in our lives we all encounter bias. Sometimes it’s overt, but more often than not it’s unconscious on the part of the offender. Of the two types, the unconscious bias is the most difficult for me to deal with, in part because the person doing it is unaware of it, but mostly because of the unmitigated arrogance of most people who do it. They would be gravely offended if you called them on it and would vehemently deny that they are being biased, and unlike the overt bigot who does it, admits it, and feels no remorse for it, would act as if you’ve victimized them for even suggesting that they had discriminated against you.

Have a break or you will break

Growing up in a one-horse town

May 24, 2023

As I look back over the years, I’ve concluded that the main difference between living in a small town and in a big city is that in a city the turmoil is often so far away you’re unaware of it, but in a small town, you have a front-row seat to every tragedy. And, small towns have as much tragedy per capita as any large city. The only thing we never had to worry about was traffic jams.

A mother’s love

May 24, 2023

It has been said that a mother’s love to her child is the purest type of love. Although it may not be unlike the love that someone gives to a special person or to a significant other, a mother’s love has been proven many times to be unconditional and devoid of any pretensions. Even if she is not asked about it, a mother will always put the welfare of her child in the forefront, without thought of her own.

The Challenges of the Ascension

May 24, 2023

There are many things that we can get from the ascension of Jesus but one important thing that we must not forget is that it was before the ascension of Jesus that He gave the Great Commission.

More on press freedom

May 15, 2023

Here are more random thoughts shared by multi-awarded journalist, Inday Espina-Varona, a Bacoleña, during the World Press Freedom Day forum held last week in Iloilo City.

The forum was sponsored by the Graciano Lopez Jaena Foundation.

* Journalists today can relate to the oppression that Lopez Jaena, Marcelo del Pilar and Dr. Jose Rizal Rizal faced. They also understand the why’s of oppression and attacks on press freedom.

Press freedom is high on the bill of rights, together with freedom of expression, freedom to organize and to assembly, because there are the rights that, when exercised well, best ensure that all other rights are respected by states.
