A woman from Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, has fallen victim to an alleged identity theft scheme after discovering that she was registered as married to a foreign national without her knowledge, or consent.
Official records from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) revealed that Jelyn Carpentero Gedor was listed as legally married to Kenji Matsuda, a Japanese national, in May 2018 at Santa Maria, Bulacan.
The Department of Foreign Affairs also confirmed that her name was used to secure a Philippine passport in 2018, also using her address and signature.
But she said she does not know the Japanese national, or the woman, whose photo appeared in the passport along with her name.
A social media post also surfaced about the alleged suspect, who stole Gedor’s identity and orchestrated the fraudulent filing, and is being hunted down by creditors over separate debt issues.
Gedor is coordinating with the office of 5th District Rep. Emilio Bernardino Yulo to bring this matter to the National Bureau of Investigation and file a formal complaint to clear her name.
She first discovered the identity theft when she went to the PSA office to secure a Certificate of No Marriage Record, in preparation for her upcoming wedding. | TMD
