A 770-lineal meter stone masonry project, worth P28.2-million, was completed along Matagoy Creek in Silay City, Negros Occidental and aims to significantly reduce the risk of flashflood in the area.

The flood control project includes embankment from borrow and provision of metallic-coated gabions, as well as a 0.6-meter-wide capping, the Department of Public Works and Highways in Western Visayas said Sept. 5.

“This structure will directly benefit residents living along the creek and those in a nearby subdivision, safeguarding their homes and livelihoods from possible flood devastation when heavy rains occur,” DPWH6 director Sanny Boy Oropel said in a statement.

Undertaken by the DPWH Negros Occidental 1st District Engineering Office, the project will stabilize the creek’s banks, effectively preventing erosion, hence, preserving the surrounding environment.

“The structure will protect riverbanks from possible erosion that may damage the nearby agricultural lands and houses along the river,” District Engineer Dene Baldonado Jr. said. “This will help ensure that our local farmers can conveniently go on with farming without worrying about possible harm, especially when heavy rains occur.”

Matagoy Creek is a narrow waterway in Barangay Rizal, Silay City. Addressing the long-standing flooding issue at the creek represents a critical investment in community safety and resilience, the DPWH said. ||
