The Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) in Negros Oriental has culled 539 pigs in July and August as part of efforts to contain the spread of the African swine fever (ASF).
Vernon Lumbania, PVO officer-in-charge, told the Philippine News Agency Sept. 1, that ASF cases continue to be detected in the province despite ongoing containment measures.
He said the depopulation included both pigs that tested positive for ASF and those that were not infected but were housed with infected animals.
Per the latest weekly report, as of Aug. 28, active ASF cases were recorded in Valencia (1), Pamplona (40), Siaton (24), and Bayawan City (42). Lumbania said the culled pigs came from Valencia (43 heads), Zamboanguita (6), Pamplona (2), Bayawan City (240), Tanjay City (145), Amlan (58), and Siaton (45).
No new cases were reported in La Libertad, Dauin, Mabinay, Canlaon City, and Sta. Catalina.
But Lumbania said that new cases have also been reported this week in Bayawan City, Pamplona, and Valencia, though these will be included in the PVO’s consolidated report on Friday.
The PVO is also continuing to collect blood samples from areas where ASF cases have been detected as part of its disease monitoring and containment efforts. ||
