More than a month after he died in an encounter with remnants of the New People’s Army in Escalante City, Negros Occidental, the late Army Cpl. John Rey Brasil was laid to rest on July 4 at a cemetery in Barangay Kansilayan, Murcia, with full military honors.
The family of the fallen soldier had requested that his burial be delayed until after the birthday of his wife on July 1 in a final gesture of the couple’s togetherness.
Lt. Col. Eric Alfonso, commander of the 79th Infantry Battalion, earlier said that Brasil had promised his wife that he would come home for her birthday.

The fallen soldier left behind his 24-year-old wife, whom he married only a year ago.
His death has drawn tributes from government officials, military leaders, and peace advocates who hailed his dedication and sacrifice.
The 79IB accorded Brasil with full military honors ceremony, including a 21-gun salute.
The Philippine Army also expressed solidarity with the bereaved family, assuring them that his service and sacrifice would be remembered with honor and respect.
Earlier, the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict commended the fallen soldier for his heroism and ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of lasting peace in Negros Occidental.
Beyond his military service, the task force also recognized Brasil’s active involvement in the Youth for Peace Movement-Northern Negros Chapter, where he dedicated time to mentoring and inspiring young Filipinos to embrace patriotism, responsible citizenship, and community participation. | GPB
