The beautiful island of Siquijor, dubbed as “Isla de Fuego,’ is the location of the latest movie of phenomenal social media sensation, writer-filmmaker Darryl Yap. “Ang Manananggal na Nahahati ang Puso,” is essentially “Siquijor’s movie,” as shared by Direk Darryl in a recent virtual interview.

Premiering on Friday, October 1, through the now buzz word, Vivamax, this is the 10th film of Direk Darryl since he was discovered by Viva Films in 2018 through his short film on Facebook, “Jowable,” which was made into a full-length movie. And, the rest is history, as they say.

The movie, which stars two of the more in demand young actors today, Aubrey Caraan and Marco Gallo, is not your run-of-the-mill kind of movie. According to Direk Darryl, it’s a romantic comedy “with a twist.”

It tells the story of a college student, Giuseppe (Marco Gallo), who went to a small barrio to do research for his thesis about the mythical Filipino creatures called “aswang.” There, he meets the eccentric barrio girl Giniper (Aubrey Caraan) who takes the opportunity to help Giuseppe with his research. With Giniper’s help, Giuseppe will not just learn about mythical creatures in the barrio, but he will also experience enchanting encounters with different people.

Also starring in the movie are comedians and viral YouTube vloggers Chad Kinis, Lassy Marquez, and MC Calaquian, collectively known as the Beks Battalion, who play the roles of Gudong, Gingging, and Gimo, respectively; and Teresa Loyzaga as Guinta. Veteran actors Gina Pareño and Johnny Revilla play cameo roles.

In the midst of the pandemic and lockdown situations in many places, Siquijor opened its doors to the production team, and the enchanting and mesmerizing beauty of the island was effectively caught on camera.

“The Siquijodnons loved the story when they came to know about it. They did not resist their being labeled (again) as an ‘aswang’-proliferating place as we did a lot of research on the culture and traditions of the place and its people,” enthused Direk Darryl.

Since his first blockbuster movie, “Jowable,” up to his most talked-about films like “Paglaki Ko Gusto Kong Maging Pornstar” and “Tililing,” there is no stopping Direk Darryl in making films that easily click with the audience. With its bizarre combination of comedy, love story and “aswang,” “Ang Manananggal na Nahahati ang Puso” will definitely be another hit for movie viewers.
