Local government officials in Negros Occidental have condemned the recent violent incidents allegedly perpetrated by remnants of the New People’s Army (NPA), calling for stronger community cooperation and continued efforts to protect civilians and sustain peace and development.

In Cauayan, Mayor John Rey Tabujara said town residents deserve to live and work in their communities without fear, intimidation or violence.

Tabujara described such acts as a grave violation of human rights and a direct threat to peace, security and the overall well-being of the community.

“As your local chief executive, I stand resolute with the people in condemning violence in all its forms,” Tabujara said.

He assured residents of Cauayan that the local government would continue to uphold peace, protect communities and maintain peace and order through strengthened coordination with government agencies and other stakeholders.

Similar condemnation was issued by village chief Romulo Amacan of Malasibog in Escalante City, following the NPA attack in Sitio Bautista on Sept. 29 that killed a paramilitary trooper and wounded two soldiers.

The statements came amid renewed concern over violence against civilians in Negros Island.

Between Oct. 4 and 12, NPA remnants killed three farmers in separate incidents, prompting calls for an end to attacks on civilians and for justice for the victims and their families.

The village council of Malasibog urged residents to remain calm but vigilant following the armed encounter, which also caused fear and anxiety among students and teachers of Malasibog Integrated School.

Amacan said violence has no place in a law-abiding community, particularly when government personnel are carrying out peace and development initiatives.

The attack targeted military personnel involved in the Mobile Community Support and Sustainment Program, which supports government efforts to promote peace and development in local communities.

Amacan appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities by immediately reporting suspicious activities and sharing information that could help prevent further violence. | GPB
