The San Carlos Negros Chess Club, with the local government unit, kicked off the city’s 2024 Charter Day events with a two-day Open Rapid Chess Tournament over the weekend at the SCC Multi-Purpose Hall in Park Marina.
The tournament is among the sports events lined up for the 64th Charter Day of San Carlos City, participated in by 220 players from the cities of Escalante, Toledo, Davao, Cebu, Dumaguete, and Manila, and the province of Bohol.
Vice Mayor Christopher Paul Carmona, San Carlos Negros Chess Club president and tournament organizer Henry Silva, chief arbiter Edward dela Torre, and Grandmaster Darwin Laylo led the ceremonial move.
Winners and top players in the different categories will receive cash prizes, ranging from P500 to P54,000.
Silva said that inviting players from different places in the country could help boost the city’s tourism. He thanked Mayor Renato Gustilo, Carmona, and 1st District Rep. Gerardo Valmayor Jr. for providing an additional P90,000 to the winners.
Twelve-year-old Hendrik Izaack Wade and 14-year-old Glaiza Sophia Mirande of the San Carlos team said their coach and parents encouraged them to join so that they could learn from other players from various places, the city said in a press release.
Trojans 17 Under Team captain Bonn Rainauld Tibod of Toledo City brought his team to the tournament to determine their strengths and weaknesses against different players. He also commended Silva for providing accommodation for the players. | SCC-PIO photo
