The State University of Northern Negros (SUNN), formerly Northern Negros State College of Science and Technology, held its inauguration ceremony and investiture of its very first university president, Dr. Renante Egcas, April 26 in Sagay City.
This marks a new chapter of education and opportunities, a milestone in its journey towards global recognition, the SUNN Publication and Public Affairs Office said, adding that the transition from Nonescost to SUNN “represents more than just a change in name or status. It embodies a journey of growth, transformation, and aspiration.”
SUNN emerges as a beacon of knowledge, innovation, and community engagement, and as it continues to evolve and adapt to the evolving landscape of higher education, “its impact will be felt far beyond the confines of its campus, shaping the future of individuals, communities, and society as a whole.”
Negros Occidental 2nd District Rep. Alfredo Maranon III, and city and school officials and employees, among others, attended the inauguration and investiture rites, which also served as a thank-you event to all who did their part in the transition from a state college to a state university.
The Commission on Higher Education en banc approved this January the conversion of Nonescost to SUNN, the first state university in Sagay City with campuses in Escalante City and Calatrava town.
Nonescost began as a modest institution, offering primarily undergraduate programs, with focus on teaching and community engagement.
Its resources, faculty expertise, and student body may have been limited compared to other universities, but, as the demand for higher education grows and the institution’s reputation flourishes, aspirations for expansion emerge, the school said.
Over time, Nonescost expanded its academic offerings and campus infrastructure, invested in research and innovation, and enhanced faculty expertise, before its transformation as a state university. ||
