Two universities from Negros Island Region were national finalists in the college/university category of the 2026 Search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools initiated by the Environmental Management Bureau.
The Central Philippines State University (CPSU) in Murcia, Negros Occidental won as runner-up while Foundation University, based in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, was one of the Top Five Champions in the same category, the EMB-NIR said.
“The recognition of the two Negros-based institutions highlights the region’s continued commitment to promoting environmental sustainability through education and campus-based environmental initiatives,” it added.

The national search for Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Schools continues to serve as a platform for recognizing outstanding environmental practices in schools, and in strengthening environmental stewardship among the youth and academic communities across the Philippines.
This year, 78 entries were submitted nationwide under three categories: elementary, high school, and colleges/universities, which reflected the growing commitment of schools to adopt sustainable and environment-friendly practices, with the awarding ceremony held April 22 at Seda Vertis in Quezon City.
Launched in 2009 by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the EMB, the search aims to recognize schools that integrate environmental sustainability into their instruction, research, extension, and campus operations.
It encourages schools to become actively involved in addressing environmental concerns and promoting awareness and participation among students, faculty, and surrounding communities.
The national search forms part of the government’s implementation of Republic Act 9512, or the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act, which promotes environmental education and sustainable development initiatives in schools nationwide, the EMB said. ||
