The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod has commended an engineer from Barangay Sum-ag in the City, Maria Glensie Hombrebueno, for having been selected by the Mauritshuis Museum for her reinterpretation of Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring”.

Hombrebueno submitted an entry along with 3,427 artists, both amateurs and professionals, to an open call of the Mauritshuis to creative makers all over the world to unleash their imagination, reinterpret, and make their own rendition of the “Girl with a Pearl Earring”, the Philippine Embassy in The Netherlands said in a post.

“Babaeng Nakaperlas” is a portrait in watercolor of a Filipina with a pearl earring and in mustard-colored clothing. The Philippines, also known as ‘Pearl of the Orient Seas’, inspired the artist to bring this painting to fruition, the Embassy added.

Councilor Em Ang, who authored the resolution of commendation approved by the SP Wednesday, said that the international recognition received by Hombrebueno “brings pride and honor to Bacolod City and gives inspiration to other local artists as they continue to hone their talent, develop their style, and realize the endless possibilities in arts”.

Hombrebueno, a Hague-based artist, is a self-taught painter from Barangay Sum-ag, who migrated to the Netherlands in 2019.

The Mauritshuis Museum, a world-class museum in The Hague, Netherlands started an open call last January 2023 to reinterpret Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s famous painting, where Hombrebueno’s “Babaeng Nakaperlas” is one of 170 artworks selected out of the more than 3,000 entries, added Ang, who is the chairperson of the SP Committee on History, Culture, and Arts.

Hombrebueno’s artwork was shown on a loop along with nine other works in the museum’s ‘digital frame’ until April 30, and may still be accessed at mauritshuis.nl, on instagram at #mygirlwithapearl, or at WITAI and www.instagram.com/witai.art, the Embassy added./CGC
