On May 31, Central Philippine University held its commencement exercises for the university colleges.
Graduates walked across the stage. Diplomas were handed. Tassels were moved from right to left. Families cheered. For a moment, the years of hard work, sleepless nights, and sacrifice were celebrated. But now the celebration is over.
The question that remains is this: “What comes next?” Graduation is not the end. It is a sending. CPU does not produce graduates to sit still. CPU produces Centralians who are sent out to bear fruit.
John 15:16 records Jesus saying to His disciples, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.” These words were not spoken only to the 11 disciples. They are spoken to every follower of Christ who has been prepared, equipped, and now sent.
Graduation is a commissioning. The stage was not a finish line. It was a starting point.
First, remember that you were chosen for a purpose.
John 15:16 says, “You did not choose me, but I chose you.”
In a world that tells graduates to find their own way, chase their own dreams, and build their own name, Jesus gives a different message. You were chosen. Your life is not an accident. Your graduation was not luck.
The same God who knew you before you were born has chosen you for a purpose. That purpose is not merely to earn a living. It is to bear fruit that lasts.
The world measures success by salary, status, and possessions. Jesus measures success by fruitfulness.
Have you helped anyone know God? Have you served anyone in need? Have you lived a life that points to Jesus? These are the fruits that last.
Degrees fade. Titles are forgotten. But a life that bears fruit for the kingdom of God has eternal significance. You were chosen for this.
Second, remember that you are sent to bear fruit that lasts.
Jesus said, “I appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.” The word “go” assumes movement.
Graduates are not meant to stay in the university forever. You are sent. Sent to your workplace. Sent to your community. Sent to your family. Sent to the nations. Wherever you go, you go as a sent one.
What is fruit that lasts? It is not fame. It is not fortune. It is transformed lives. It is the gospel shared. It is kindness shown. It is faithfulness in small things. It is a character shaped by Christ.
These fruits do not rot. They do not fade. They follow you into eternity. Every time you choose integrity over compromise, generosity over greed, and love over indifference, you are bearing fruit that lasts.
To the graduates of CPU: You have been equipped with knowledge. You have been shaped by faith. Now you are sent. Do not waste your sending. Do not live for comfort. Do not settle for fruit that perishes.
You were chosen. You were appointed. Now go and bear fruit that lasts. And remember the promise of Jesus: “I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” | NWI
