Retail tycoon Lucio Co has been declared the “Adopted Son of Bacolod” Jan. 10, and will be the honorary mayor of the highly-urbanized city on Feb. 10, in line with the Bacolaodiat Festival celebration.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday passed a resolution authored by Councilor Al Victor Espino, “to express our recognition and regard to the goals and aspirations of Mr. Lucio Co”.

As chairman of S&R Membership Shopping, Co has played a pivotal role in investing in Bacolod and the corporation’s investments contributed to the city’s economic growth and progress, the SP said.

“Adorned with visionary investments, he now stands as the president of the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp., establishing a strong financial connection between the corporation and the City,” the resolution added.

Mayor Alfredo Benitez requested the SP Jan. 2 to pass a corresponding resolution in recognition of Co, adding that as owner and chairman of Puregold and Cosco Capital Inc., he has “brought significant contribution to the business and investment landscape of Bacolod and has led an exemplary yet low-keyed lifestyle worthy of emulation of the future generation”.

The Bacolaodiat Inc., an association of Filipino-Chinese community that has been leading the Lunar New Year celebration in Bacolod for several years now, nominated Co as this year’s adopted son, noting that he has “brought significant contribution to the business and investment in Bacolod and is prominently known to have led an exemplary life in family affairs, philanthropy, and similar civic and social activities that can always inspire emulation for generational progress and promotion of the common weal of the people”. | CGC
