The Department of Tourism-Negros Island Region (DOT-NIR), with the City Tourism Office, conducted a practical tour-guiding activity Aug. 15 at various areas in San Carlos City.

At least 32 local guides, including members of the Sipaway Eco-Tourism Workers Association, Remedios Pedicab Operators and Drivers Association, and Mayana Peak Tour Guide Association, participated in the activity.

Held as part of the seven-day community tour guiding training and accreditation for local tour guides in San Carlos City, the activity allowed participants to apply what they learned during the training while developing their knowledge, skills, and confidence in properly guiding visitors and promoting the city’s tourism destinations.

Among the destinations visited were Medina Tree Park in Sitio Medina, and Prosperidad Hills in Barangay Prosperidad, where participants practiced conducting tours, from introducing themselves and engaging with guests to describing attractions and surroundings along the Eco-Tourism Highway leading to the destinations.

DOT-NIR tourism operations officer II Joydee Ramoran said the practical tour guiding allowed participants to learn proper self-introduction and ways to handle guests’ concerns while applying what they learned during the five-day training, which covered the Filipino Brand of Service Excellence, flora and fauna, the history and culture of San Carlos City, and local products.

Ramoran also thanked Mayor Renato Gustilo and the City Tourism Office for their support throughout the training, including transportation, venue, accommodation, and the invitation of potential participants to become accredited community tour guides.

CEMO administrative aide III Ramil Tanuco said the activity is important for the city, particularly with the increasing number of visitors, noting that having trained community tour guides will help the city properly welcome guests and provide them with a better understanding of San Carlos and its attractions.

A pedicab tour was also conducted along the City Plaza and Boulevard, followed by a free guided walking tour introducing participants to several heritage and historical sites surrounding the City Public Plaza, including Colegio de Sta. Rita de San Carlos, San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral, Philippine National Bank, Unitop, and City Public Library.

DOT-trained and accredited trainor for FPSE and tour guiding from Region 7 Maria Lorena Guba was also present and led the tour, the city said. ||
