The Department of Public Works and Highways said Friday it has completed the construction of a P24.4 million flood control project that aims to prevent flash flooding hazard in the coastal municipality of E.B. Magalona in Negros Occidental.

DPWH Region 6 director Nerie Bueno said the 1,112-lineal meter revetment wall now protects Barangay Tomongtong of the town from the damaging effects of storm surges and unexpectedly high sea levels.

The project, undertaken by the DPWH Negros Occidental 1st District Engineering Office, consists of 988 lineal meters of stone masonry, 124 lineal meters of rubble concrete, and 124 lineal meters of metallic coated gabions.

Local officials thanked the DPWH for the project’s completion as it would alleviate the concerns of residents during extreme weather conditions, especially fishermen, and would also safeguard major tourist attractions, such as the well-known Tomongtong Mangrove Eco-Trail.

Meanwhile, Bueno earlier visited the DEOs in Binalbagan and Bago in Negros Occidental, and she was welcomed by district engineers Allan Rey Pajimna of the 2nd DEO and Genaro Panganiban of the 4th DEO.

Her visit to Negros Occidental was aimed to familiarize herself with the offices and to expedite the status of the projects being implemented in the province, a DPWH press release said.

“It is my goal to visit all Negros Occidental DEOs to become familiarized with the projects and the status of the infrastructures that are being implemented in this province,” Bueno said. ||
