The Association of Science and Mathematics Educators of Philippine Public and Private Schools (ASMEPPS), now on its 12th year, conducted its national competition at the University of Baguio, Baguio City on March 10-12.

Attended by 180 schools and more than 2,500 participants, ASMEPPS is the convergence of the best students who are winners of regional competitions held this school year.

The officers and board of trustees headed by their president, Prof. Eloisa E. Olivera, were in complete attendance to support the event.

Winners of this prestigious event will be awarded with a Plaque of Merit during the Champions Night in Tagaytay City this June.

Through these competitions, students are honed and prepared for life’s realities — it takes discipline to face challenges. Practice not only makes perfect but also prepares you to be a champion. Give your best and you will win. Prepare not and face the heartaches of losing.

ASMEPPS used to conduct face-to-face competitions with hundreds in attendance before COVID-19 brought havoc to the world. Facing the challenge of continuing the competition during the pandemic, they shifted to online platforms. The first few competitions faced many challenges, but the succeeding ones went smoothly. ASMEPPS has reached not only in the schools of Luzon but the entire Philippines, with many new participants coming from Mindanao and Western Visayas.

Proceeds from registration in various competitions were utilized by ASMEPPS to provide financial support to the Lions Club International, Cavite ASMEPPS. The association fully supports feeding programs, youth empowerment, assistance to children with cancer, among other LCI global causes. In partnership with DOST, ASMEPPS annually donates computer sets with DOST program for STARBOOKS Library, to selected public schools.

Other programs run by the association are Science Campus Journalism and Research Trainings. ASMEPPS is the prime mover of the YES-O for private schools in Calabarzon, a student cause-oriented organization for the environment.

The outstanding efforts of ASMEPPS was recognized by ILC Forum of World Class Leaders this February and was also invited to join international school competitions starting this year in Singapore. Together with the organization’s officers Celia Rasing, Dr. Santos Castillo and Dr. Janet de Guzman, immediate past president of Cavite ASMEPPS LCI, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed in connection with the upcoming competitions.

Professor Eloisa Olivera, teary-eyed, once confided to this writer how she was about to give up faced with challenges at the start of the pandemic.

Her faith to God, support of families, friends, and officers and members of the association, allowed her to successfully weather the hardest storm in her life.

Today, when she and China would remember these struggles, they would just look up and say `Deogratias’. It was Prof. Eloisa who helped us secure the school’s DepEd permit years back. Thanks be to God for all His guidance and blessings.

Our families, friends, parents, students and faculty members have been a blessing in establishing ASMEPPS as an educational organization. May God’s blessings continue to abound upon every member school. ||
