Quakes jolt Sipalay

Six earthquakes of varying magnitudes hit Sipalay City in Negros Occidental since the start of September, the DOST- Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported.

The latest at magnitude 4.9 was logged at 5 p.m. this afternoon, Sept. 5.

Tectonic in origin, the temblor was located at 09.88°N, 121.95°E – 055 km N 77° west of Sipalay City. No damage and aftershocks were expected, the PHIVOLCS said.

On Sept. 4, a magnitude 2.1 earthquake also jolted Sipalay City at 8:13 p.m., magnitude 3.5 on Sept. 3 at 1:11 a.m., magnitudes 2.0 at 7:49 p.m. and 2.7 at 6:25 p.m., both on Sept. 2, and magnitude 2.9 at 11:21 a.m. on Sept. 1, the report added.

Meanwhile, the third quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill initiated by the Office of the Civil Defense started with the school-based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management webinar on Sept. 3, participated by around 20,000 netizens.

On September 6, the OCD will hold a disaster preparedness webinar for rural farmers and indigenous groups; “Not Business As Usual: Increasing the Capacities of MSMEs and Cooperatives” on Sept. 7, and 3rd Quarter Ceremonial Pressing of the Button on Sept. 9.
