Former Ceres Negros superstar and AFC Cup topscorer Bienvenido Marañon is a step closer to becoming a naturalized Filipino.

This after the bill sponsored by Rep. Manny Lopez recommending the Spanish striker’s application for naturalization was unanimously approved Wednesday by the Committee on Justice headed by Rep. Vicente Veloso III of Leyte.

“It has always been my desire to play for the Azkals. I want to live here, raise my family here and help football in this lovely country, which has been so kind to me,” the 34-year-old Marañon, who was born in the Province of Cadiz in Spain, told the Committee.

After getting the nod of the Committee on Justice, the bill will be forwarded to the plenary for final approval.

“I’m optimistic this will pass through the plenary with flying colors,” former Bacolod congressman and mayor Monico O. Puentevella said.

The former Bacolod official, who has served as FIFA director for TV and Marketing and was a Philippine Football Federation adviser, endorsed Marañon in the Congressional hearing and appealed for the approval of his naturalization.

“His inclusion to the national team will improve the standing of the Azkals in Asia and hopefully qualify for the World Cup one day,” Puentevella said.

Marañon has endeared himself to Negrosanon football fans as a starter for the first AFC Cup ASEAN Champions and Philippine Football League three-time titlists, Ceres Negros. – NAB
