Private First Class Rodelo Alfanza, who died following an encounter in Iloilo on Jan. 17, was laid to rest in a private cemetery in Barangay Bato, Sagay City, Negros Occidental on Sunday.
Family members and fellow soldiers led in paying last respects to Alfanza, who was accorded with full military honors.
At his burial rites, a gun salute was held to honor his committed and dedicated service to the Philippine Army and the nation.
The Philippine flag, which was draped over Alfanza’s casket as soldiers carried his remains to its final resting place, was handed to his mother Elizabeth Alegre Alfanza and his fiancee Vevien Catipunan-Llerin afterwards.
Maj. Gen. Marion Sison, commander of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, honoring Alfanza’s memory for his service marked by dignity and gallantry.
“You will forever be etched in the annals of Spearhead heroes. You died not in vain but in the truest essence of soldiery, fading away with dignity and gallantry,” he added.
Alfanza died after he and fellow soldiers of 61st Infantry Battalion clashed with members of the New People’s Army led by Nahum Camariosa in Barangay Igpaho, Tubungan, Iloilo.
