The Provincial Health Office has reported an increase of 1,309 dengue cases, with seven deaths, in Negros Occidental, compared to only 383 cases in the same period last year.

From January to April 19 this year, there were 1,692 cases, or an increase of 341.78 percent.

Dr. Girlie Pinongan, provincial health officer, however, said that despite the increase in dengue cases, the number of fatalities had gone down from last year.

As of April 5, the City Health Office reported 301 dengue cases, including two fatalities, in the highly-urbanized Bacolod.

Bago City still has the highest number of cases at 333 among the 31 local government units of Negros Occidental.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral illness that can cause sudden, high fever.

Among its common symptoms include headache, intense pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, and rashes. | GB
