The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod has commended businessman Ricardo “Cano” Tan for spearheading the construction of Rooster Hotel at Campuestohan Highland Resort, which earned the Guinness World Record as the “largest building in the shape of a chicken”.

The formal declaration ceremony will be held today, Oct. 19, at Tan’s Campuestohan Highland Resort in Talisay City, Negros Occidental, although the Guinness World Records certificate has been issued Sept. 8.

The resolution of commendation, authored by Councilor Jason Villarosa with Councilor Celia Matea Flor as co-author, said that while Campuestohan is in Talisay City, it draws tourists from around the country, and even abroad, benefitting the province of Negros Occidental and most especially Bacolod City, which serves as a starting point for tourism.

“The Rooster Hotel inside the resort also creates employment in favor of citizens of Bacolod City, producing a healthy divergence of recreation, employment, and tourism,” the SP said in approving the resolution during its regular session Oct. 16.

Tan, former councilor of Bacolod, earlier said the building’s chicken shape aims to “give recognition to the fighting cock breeding industry of the province”, which provides livelihood to thousands of Negrenses, and boosts the economy of Negros Occidental, next only to sugar.

Completed in 456 days, the hotel is 114 feet tall, with 15 rooms and amenities.

“It is the largest building in the shape of a chicken, the first and only one, not only in the Philippines, but in the whole world. We made history, and nobody was able to achieve this, but us,” Tan had said, adding that after receiving the Guinness’ recognition, “all my sacrifices have been compensated.”

As per the certification, the iconic landmark at the family-owned resort “measures 34.9 meters (114 feet, 7 inches) in height, 12.1 meters (39 feet, 9 inches) in width, and 28.1 meters (92 feet, 5 inches) in length”. | CGC
