The recent eruption of Kanlaon Volcano is among the factors contributing to poor air quality in parts of Negros Occidental, according to the Environmental Management Bureau-Negros Island Region (EMB-NIR).
EMB-NIR Director Vicente Losbañes said on Thursday, Sept. 3 the volcanic ash from Kanlaon may add to the particulate matter in the air, which can penetrate deep into the lungs when inhaled.
“Kanlaon’s eruption also contributes since it is near our monitoring station,” Losbañes said.
The EMB-NIR said haze affecting several areas in the Negros Island Region may also be associated with smoke and transboundary haze from ongoing forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Latest air quality monitoring showed acute unhealthy conditions in La Castellana, unhealthy for sensitive groups in La Carlota City, and very unhealthy levels in Bacolod City.
The agency continues to monitor ambient air quality in Bacolod City, La Castellana and other areas in the region.
With the elevated pollution levels, EMB-NIR advised residents to avoid prolonged outdoor activities and wear face mask, particularly those who are sensitive to poor air quality. | GPB
