NIR economy sustains 5.7% growth in 2025

The economy of Negros Island Region was third fastest among all regions in the country in 2025 at P671.68 billion, mirroring its 2024 performance of 635.47 billion pesos, the Philippine Statistics Authority-NIR said.

John Campomanes, OIC regional director of PSA-NIR, said that main contributors to the 2025 growth were wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, contributing 1.2 percentage points and posted 5.3 percent growth; agriculture, forestry, and fishing, contributing 1.1 percentage points with 8.5 percent growth; and construction, contributing 0.6 percentage point and recorded 6.5 percent growth.

Among the 16 industries, human health and social work activities posted the fastest growth with 12.3 percent, the chief statistical specialist said.

This was followed by public administration and defense; compulsory social security with 10.6 percent; and agriculture, forestry, and fishing with 8.5 percent.

Among major industries, services accounted for 64.6 percent of the region’s total Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) in 2025, followed by industry with 22.0 percent share. Agriculture, forestry, and fishing (AFF) shared 13.4 percent of the region’s economy, the PSA-NIR said April 23.

Negros Island Region contributed 0.2 percentage point to the total 4.4 percent growth in the country’s economy in 2025, and accounted for 2.9 percent of the total Philippine Gross Domestic Product (GDP), it added.

Government spending in NIR also logged the fastest growth in 2025. “All major expenditure items recorded growth. Government final consumption expenditure (GFCE) posted the fastest growth at 5.8 percent, followed by household final consumption expenditure (HFCE) at 4.4 percent, imports of goods and services from the Rest of the World (ROW) at 4.2 percent, gross capital formation at 2.4 percent, and exports of goods and services to the ROW at 0.4 percent.”

The region’s per capita GRDP likewise increased to P138,726 in 2025, a 5.3 percent growth from P131,749 posted in 2024. The per capital GRDP of Negros Island Region was 32.0 percent lower than national per capita GDP of P204,005 last year, Campomanes said. ||
