The Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island emitted multiple ash anew on March 23, with ash plumes seen rising 500 meters above the crater, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The first multiple ash emission took place at 6:54 a.m, followed by another emission at 2:40 p.m., and a third at 5:44 p.m. on Monday.
Phivolcs also recorded 18 volcanic quakes, including 10 volcanic tremors, ranging from 11 to 91 minutes long.
The plumes drifted in the southwest direction.
From March 20 to 22, Phivolcs logged 15 ash emission events at Kanlaon Volcano.
“Alert Level 2 is maintained over Kanlaon Volcano and entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone must be prohibited,” Phivolcs said.
It added that the volcanic edifice remains inflated, suggesting pressure is building within the volcano.
Kanlaon Volcano had moderately explosive eruptions on Feb. 19 and 26, as well as on March 15.
Phivolcs raised possible hazards that may occur, including sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions, which is a precursor to magmatic activity. | GB
