The P55-million modern abattoir in Barangay Alegria, Murcia, Negros Occidental is now ready to accept clients, following its blessing and inauguration on Thursday (Jan. 22).

It is one of sub-projects under the Department of Agriculture-led Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) in Negros Occidental, which is co-funded by the World Bank, the national government, and the provincial government.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, who led the inauguration of the state-of-the-art slaughterhouse, said the livestock sector plays a vital role in strengthening rural economy by supporting livelihoods, generating employment, and ensuring food security in communities.

“By improving sanitary standards, enhancing product quality, and strengthening the value chain from farm to market, this facility will benefit our livestock raisers and meat vendors, and more importantly, it helps safeguard public health while creating greater economic opportunities in the countryside,” Lacson said.

He noted that the inauguration of the modern slaughterhouse is a concrete mark of progress for Murcia.

Lacson thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the implementation of the project through PRDP, which is proven to be a strong partner of local government units, by investing in infrastructure that directly uplifts farmers and livestock raisers and promotes inclusive growth.

Mayor Victor Gerardo Rojas, who led local preparations for the facility, said the abattoir would position Murcia as a key supplier of quality meat in Negros Occidental.

Third District Board Member Andrew Montelibano said the project aligns with the district’s goal of strengthening agricultural value chains.

Five other modern slaughterhouses in Hinobaan, Cauayan, Binalbagan, Toboso and San Carlos City are set to be operationalized this year.

A similar facility is on the final stage of construction in E.B. Magalona. | GB
