Malacañang said Jan. 19 that the impeachment complaint filed against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is “baseless”, stressing that his actions have been in accordance with the law and the constitution.
The impeachment complaint, filed by lawyer Andre de Jesus, and endorsed by Pusong Pinoy party-list Rep. Jett Nisay, accuses Marcos of violating the constitution and betraying public trust, including over the arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court and alleged corruption linked to flood control projects.
It is the first impeachment complaint filed against Marcos since he assumed office in 2022.
Palace Press officer Claire Castro said in a Philippine News Agency report that the Palace has yet to receive a copy of the complaint, limiting its ability to comment in detail.
However, she noted that the issues raised in the complaint are not new. “Pero itong mga issue na ito ay matagal na natin nasagot at matagal na natin na-ipaliwanag (But these issues have long been answered and explained). Sa ngayon … masasabi natin ito ay walang basehan (For now, we can say that this is without basis).”
Castro stressed that the President always acts within legal bounds.
In a statement, the Palace said it recognizes that the “filing of complaints is part of the democratic process provided for under the Constitution. We respect this process and trust that Congress, as a co-equal branch of government, will discharge its duties with honesty, integrity, and fidelity to the rule of law.”
While these processes take their course, the President will continue to govern, ensuring that public services remain uninterrupted and that the work of government stays focused on improving the lives of Filipinos, the Presidential Communications Office stressed. ||
