The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported a series of ash emission events on Monday (Dec. 22) at the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island.

Phivolcs said the volcano emitted ash from 9:01 a.m. to 9:29 a.m. and 10:29 a.m. to 11:07 a.m.

“These events generated grayish plumes that rose to 300 meters above the crater before drifting northwest,” it said.

Around 4:05 p.m., another ash emission began and persisted for nearly two hours. “The ash plume rose 900 meters above the summit and dispersed to the general northwest,” Phivolcs said.

It noted that thin ash may have affected communities in the cities of La Carlota and Bago and Murcia town in Negros Occidental.

On Sunday (Dec. 21), Phivolcs logged one volcanic earthquake and the release of 2,578 tons of sulfur dioxide.

Alert Level 2 remains in effect for Mount Kanlaon. | GB
