About 12,000 households in off-grid areas located in Negros Occidental, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Palawan, Masbate, Samar, and Zamboanga del Sur, are targeted to be energized through the microgrid systems (MGS), the Department of Energy said.
Together with the National Electrification Administration (NEA), the DOE is ready to fulfill the national goal of bringing electricity to the remaining unserved households and communities across the country.
To reach the geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) beyond the coverage of existing power distribution networks, the DOE will undertake a competitive selection process (CSP) for MGS providers.
These MGS, each equipped with self-contained power generation units and localized distribution networks, are designed to provide reliable and sustainable electricity in areas that existing distribution utilities or electric cooperatives can no longer reach.
The DOE and NEA are committed to the efficient and timely utilization of funds that have been allocated by the Department of Budget and Management for electrification projects in 2024 and 2025.
For the DOE’s total electrification project (TEP), the goal is to energize additional 5,000 households nationwide this year, on top of the 17,000 households to be energized by NEA that are covered by previous years TEP allocation.
The DOE, in a press release, also reminded host distribution utilities on the available P1.5 billion Energy Regulations 1-94 Electrification Funds to help fast-track household electrification in their respective franchise areas.
As of Dec. 2024, the national household electrification level is at 94.75 percent, equivalent to 27.9 million households with electricity access. Until 2028, the DOE estimated that around 3.08 million households will require electricity connection. ||
