Dumaguete City has been adjudged as the Emerging Sports Tourism Destination in the entire Philippines for year 2023.
In his letter-invitation to Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, Charles Lim, founder and chairperson of the 6th Philippine Sports Tourism Awards, said that Dumaguete will be one of those that will be “honored and recognized as among the most deserving entities and personalities for having contributed so effectively and impressively in boosting tourism through sports endeavors and events in the country.”
Lim said he hopes the award in honor of Dumaguete will encourage and inspire others to reach new heights in advocating sports tourism.
The award will be presented to Remollo on Nov. 22 at the Axis Nustar Resort Cebu City, in an elaborate ceremony to be attended by the country’s movers and shakers in the sports tourism industry, including top business corporations, travel agencies, national government officials, and athletes.
Dumaguete is already a Hall of Famer as Sports Organizer of the Year in the entire Philippines, having won the award in 2017, 2018, and 2019, the city said in a press release.
Remollo was also awarded as 2019 Sports Personality of the Year for the government sector, along with his counterpart, Manuel V. Pangilinan, for the private sector.
In 2017, Dumaguete was a runner-up in the Sports Tourism Destination of the Year category, which was won by Subic Bay Freeport.
Remollo has been making use of his network of avid sports enthusiasts and sponsors to hold their events in Dumaguete, putting this small but thriving city in the map for major sports tourism events, boosting the local economy.
Among the sports tourism events held in the city, primarily at the Pantawan People’s Park, previously and/or on a regular bases are the Dumaguete Triathlon, Sandurot Half Marathon, Children’s Games, the Dumaguete Dragon Boat Challenge, the Beach Volleyball Republic On Tour, the Philippine University Games, Little League Philippines Series, National Frisbee Ultimate Championship, Philippine National Games, Batang Pinoy, Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association, Philippine Super Liga Spike on Tour, and the 1st Southeast Asian Beach Handball. ||
