Western Visayas continues to be generally peaceful, with crime volume recording a decrease of 3,512 incidents, or 20 percent, in the first 10 months of this year, compared to the same period in 2020.

The crime volume last year was recorded at 14,022 incidents, regional police spokesman, Lt. Col. Arnel Solis, said.

Negros Occidental and the highly urbanized Bacolod City were not included among areas in the region with the highest decrease in crime incident percentage.

Iloilo, Guimaras, and Aklan posted the highest reduction in crime incidents, police records show.

Solis also reported that the 8 Focus Crimes, including murder, homicide, physical injury, robbery, theft, rape, and carnapping of motor vehicle and motorcycle, also dropped by 9.72 percent, with 2,136 cases reported this year, compared to 2,366 in 2020.

Only theft cases increased, from 424 last year to 530 this year, and carnapping incidents, from one to six in the same period, he added.

Non-index crimes, or the violation of special laws, such as illegal drugs, gambling, loose guns, and the arrest of wanted persons accounted for 6,407 incidents this year, from 7,902 in the same period last year.

P/Brig. Gen. Rolando Miranda, Western Visayas police director, commended the police unit commanders for successfully reducing the crime incidents in Region 6.

He also encourages all units to continue performing satisfactorily in the maintenance of peace and order throughout the region. — GB
