The Christmas story is filled with joy, but it also unfolds against a backdrop of struggles, doubts, and uncertainties.

Let us focus on Elizabeth and Zechariah and their roles in the Christmas story. Their story reminds us that even in the midst of trials, God’s plan is at work.

First, trust God’s plan even when it seems impossible.

Zechariah and Elizabeth’s story sets the stage for the coming of Jesus. Zechariah, a priest, and Elizabeth, his wife, were righteous in God’s sight, but they carried the deep pain of childlessness. In their culture, this was often seen as a sign of divine disfavor, and they were advanced in years, making the hope of a child seem impossible.

One day, while Zechariah was performing his priestly duties in the temple, an angel appeared to him with the incredible news that Elizabeth would bear a son, John, who would prepare the way for the Lord.

Overwhelmed by doubt, Zechariah questioned how this could be. Because of his disbelief, the angel struck him mute until the prophecy was fulfilled.

Elizabeth’s response was different. When she conceived, she said, “The Lord has done this for me. In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people” (Luke 1:25).

Her faith allowed her to recognize God’s hand in her life, even when it defied human logic.

Their story teaches us that God’s plans often exceed our understanding. Zechariah struggled with doubt, but God’s promises were fulfilled nonetheless. Elizabeth trusted and rejoiced.

Are there areas in your life where you find it hard to trust God? Like Zechariah, do you wrestle with doubt, or like Elizabeth, can you recognize His favor even in unexpected circumstances?

Secondly, support others in their struggles.

Mary’s journey intersects with Elizabeth’s during a time of great uncertainty. Mary, after receiving the angel’s announcement that she would conceive the Son of God, faced immense challenges.

She was young, unmarried, and undoubtedly concerned about how society would perceive her pregnancy. Seeking solace, Mary hurried to the hill country to visit Elizabeth.

Elizabeth’s welcome was filled with joy and affirmation. When Mary greeted her, the child in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!” (Luke 1:42). In this moment, Elizabeth not only affirmed Mary’s faith but also became a source of encouragement and strength.

Zechariah, though silent, was also a part of this story. In his silence, he witnessed the unfolding of God’s promises. His temporary muteness gave him the opportunity to reflect on God’s power and faithfulness.

Together, Elizabeth and Zechariah’s household became a sanctuary for Mary – a place where she could process her calling and find support.

This moment teaches us the importance of seeking and offering support during times of struggle. Who are the Elizabeths in your life?

Who affirms your faith and reminds you of God’s promises? And like Elizabeth and Zechariah, how can your home be a place of refuge and encouragement for others?

This Christmas season, let us be like Elizabeth, offering encouragement to those who need it. And let us learn from Zechariah, that even in our doubt, God’s promises remain true. | NWI
