The ongoing construction of shoreline protection from Pantawan 1 to Pantawan 2, at 360 lineal meters, is part of efforts to protect the facilities, establishments, and the people along Rizal Boulevard, which is the show window of Dumaguete City.
The project, worth P54 million, has been granted a Certificate of Non-Coverage by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the city said Sept. 11.
It added that the promenade area is too narrow and dangerous due to damage and dilapidation.
The existing seawall protecting the promenade area is in danger of possible collapse as it is also subject to storm surges and big waves, especially during inclement weather and typhoons.
The city said the project will create a buffer of approximately eight meters to widen the narrow promenade area for the safety and comfort of joggers and strollers, as well as to protect the facilities in the vicinity and prevent further erosion and damage.
The shoreline protection structure or sea wall is designed with a reinforced concrete wave deflector and wave breaker blocks, the city said, adding that a portion of the boulevard has been cordoned off to ensure the safety of passersby and to secure the equipment and construction materials being used in the ongoing civil works. ||
