A fire that destroyed 85 houses and partially damaged two others left 106 families homeless in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental Friday night, Sept. 6.

About 318 residents of Endrina-Gustilo Sts. in Barangay 5 have been affected and are now staying at the covered court of Barangay 4, according to a report of the City Social Welfare and Development Office.

Their basic needs, such as food and non-food items, are being provided by the city government.

The fire that engulfed a 3,000 square-meter area caused an estimated damage of P750,000, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said in a report.

The BFP added that the blaze, which lasted for about 90 minutes, was believed to have been triggered by an unattended lighted cigarette.

BFP investigator Fire Officer 3 Joseph Earl Solivio said that two persons of interest are now in the custody of the San Carlos City Police Station, as witnesses claimed that the fire originated from the house they were occupying.

Solivio admitted that their efforts to combat the fire was hampered by limited water supply although there was no reported injuries.

Fire trucks from neighboring stations and volunteer groups assisted in the operation.

“Simple precaution can save lives and property,” Solivio said as he urged residents to remain vigilant about fire safety, especially with unattended appliances and candles. | GB
