About P745,000 worth of fisheries livelihood was turned over to 10 fisherfolk associations in Sagay City, Negros Occidental, at the City Agriculture Training Center in Brgy. Rizal, Jan. 11.
The City Agriculture Office turned over 50 units of shellfish in raft to the associations based in barangays Bulanon, Taba-ao, and Plaridel, and are affected by the ongoing three-month closed fishing season in the Visayan Sea.
The project, funded by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, was initiated to help, promote, and support the development of shellfish farming and culture as an alternative livelihood for fisherfolks affected by the closed fishing season that started Nov. 15.
In her speech, city agriculturist Julie Delima said that this project aims to increase the production of shellfish, which can help boost fisheries livelihood in respective areas.
She said she hopes that each of the associations will maximize this opportunity and take care of the project that was turned over to them.
Vegetable seeds were also given to the fisherfolk and they were urged to try urban or container gardening, the city said in a press release Jan. 12.
The event was also attended by Councilor Perfecto Marañon, chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Agriculture. ||
