Councilor Claudio Jesus Puentevella, chairperson of the Sangguniang Panlungsod Committee on Health and Sanitation, has asked the Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office to require all private companies to have garbage storage/container in their places of business.

This is in accordance with City Ordinance 250, series of 2000, which establishes an effective system of garbage disposal and ecological waste management in the highly-urbanized city, added Puentevella, who is also the chairperson of the SP Committee on Environment and Ecology.

He said that Section 5 of the ordinance “provides that all households, occupants, owners or operators of industrial, commercial, or business establishment shall provide their own garbage or waste containers or receptacles for purposes of garbage disposal and sanitation.”

The proper storage of garbage is the primary responsibility of every individual, owner or operator of industrial and commercial establishments pending its collection by the city or authorized waste collector, Puentevella said in his resolution approved by the SP recently.

“The establishment of a garbage storage is needed for the successful implementation of segregation at source,” Puentevella stressed as he noted that Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, also requires solid waste containers properly marked as compostable, non-recyclable, recyclable, and special waste, for on-site collection. | CGC
