Member-organizations of the Federation of Urban Poor (FED UP) yesterday gathered at the monument of former Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. in Bacolod City to mark the 38th anniversary of the 1986 EDSA People Power.
In a statement, the group said that EDSA People Power “is never a failure, but instead, the leaders whose vested interests are beyond satisfaction are trying to kill the values of EDSA”.
Composed of several organizations of urban settlers, FED UP insisted on celebrating EDSA , despite it not being declared a holiday, stressing that “the celebration does not depend on the government but on us…We are EDSA People Power”.
The group also rejected the initiative to change the Constitution, stressing that its real motive is political. Instead of pushing for their personal agenda, FED UP urged the legislators to address pressing issues confronted by the people, such as the escalating prices of commodities that weaken the purchasing power of consumers. ||
