The upgrade of the Banago Port in Bacolod City is set to be completed by the end of June, according to an update from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) April 28.

The P568.765-million Banago Port Improvement Project is one of the biggest projects of the PPA in the Negros Island Region.

“It is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, and is expected to become a hub for more efficient and modern services for passengers and cargo in the region,” the PPA said in a statement.

The project involves the expansion of the roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) marshalling yard that can accommodate 50 trucks, widening of the road to four lanes, and construction of a three-story port operations building.

The building’s first floor can cater up to 500 passengers while the new office of the Port Management Office of Negros Occidental/Bacolod/Banago Bredco will be located on the second floor. The third floor will have a conference hall, fitness room and guest quarters.

Currently, RoRo vessels of three shipping companies are plying the route from Banago port to Dumangas port in Iloilo and vice versa.

PPA general nanager Jay Daniel Santiago, who led the project inspection April 25, said that port development is not just about the structure, but also focuses on opening doors for a better life for every Filipino.

“Through modern ports, PPA brings many opportunities to different regions in the Philippines toward collective development, in accordance with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.,” he added.

In August 2023, the PPA entered into a contract agreement with the Bacolod-based joint venture of Mamsar Construction and Industrial Corp. and Silver Dragon Construction and Lumber and Glass Supply Inc. to undertake the Banago Port Improvement Project. | PNA
