A mining company is exploring mineral resources in hills covering three barangays of Sagay City in Negros Occidental.

Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Marañon III accompanied the officers of Tambuli Mining Company Inc. in a meeting with Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson Nov. 17 to discuss the exploration project in the Nabiga-a and Sheman hills covering barangays Lopez Jaena, Bato, and Baviera.

Marañon said the exploration started several years ago and the company already obtained permits from the national Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office and from the city government of Sagay City in 2012.

The company stopped the exploration project in 2017 when there was a change in management. They will resume their exploration works this year.

The company is exploring mineral resources, like cooper and gold, since their study showed that some areas surrounding the hill have mineral deposits. The exploration project is part of the company’s further study.

Marañon recalled that in the late 80s, there were small groups of local miners that discovered minerals, like cooper and gold, mixed in river sand. — MML
