The 61st OSEAL (Orient and Southeast Asian Lions) Forum took place last week in Pattaya, Thailand, from November 14 to 17. This significant gathering provided an invaluable opportunity for Lions from the Philippines and other countries to connect with the International President, Lion Fabrício Oliveira, along with Dr. Patti Hill, the LCIF Chairperson and Immediate Past International President. Their presence underscored the forum’s importance in fostering collaboration and innovation among Lions Clubs across Southeast Asia.

Organized by Lions Clubs International, the OSEAL Forum aimed to promote networking and idea-sharing among members from 16 countries, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Malaysia, and others. The event featured a series of keynote speeches and workshops that focused on enhancing community service initiatives.

Attendees engaged in discussions about best practices in charitable work, cultural exchange, and leadership development. The vibrant cultural backdrop of Pattaya enriched the experience for participants passionate about making a difference in their communities.

Representation from District 301-A2 District 301-A2 was prominently represented by its dynamic District Governor, Leo Lion Sol Wilfredo Flores Jr., alongside key district officials such as IPDG Dante Bico and PDGs Winnie Bico, Bennie Antiporda, and Thoby Antiporda. The presence of FVDG Pol Cortez, SVDG Mhel Pechera, and various district officers further highlighted the commitment to service within the organization.

This forum marked a significant milestone for many attendees, including China Marie, who was attending her second forum as president and her first as zone chair. Personal experience attending the OSEAL Forum was particularly meaningful for me since I had missed last year’s event in Manila due to illness.

Accompanied by my sister Stella and my mother Norma, China and I arrived early in Thailand to explore tourist attractions in Bangkok and Pattaya before the forum commenced. Our hotel was conveniently located just a few kilometers from the convention center, providing easy access to all activities. Upon registration at the forum, we participated in our first session before returning to our hotel to meet Miki Purvis, who had just flown in from Manila. Miki served as our guide during our stay; she had studied yacht management in Pattaya years ago and now operates a yacht in Dumaguete. Her local knowledge added depth to our experience.

Beyond learning from the forum sessions, we indulged in Thailand’s culinary offerings. A highlight was dining at a restaurant run by Chef Andy Yang, a Michelin-awarded Pad Thai master recognized from 2019 to 2024. Our accommodation at Oyo 88 in Bangkok was conveniently adjacent to his restaurant, allowing us to enjoy his acclaimed dishes multiple times without needing extensive travel.

On our final day in Thailand, we seized the opportunity to visit iconic sites such as the Grand Palace and Wat Arun via a river cruise. Despite having traveled to Thailand for work on several occasions, this trip provided a much-needed respite from the hectic traffic back home in the Philippines. The blend of professional development at the forum with personal exploration made this experience truly enriching.

In conclusion, the 61st OSEAL Forum not only facilitated vital networking opportunities among Lions Clubs but also allowed participants like myself to immerse ourselves in Thai culture while enjoying meaningful connections with fellow Lions dedicated to community service. As I reflect on this experience, I am filled with gratitude for the friendships forged and the insights gained during this remarkable event. Khoob-khun krab, Thailand! ||
