Kalamayan art exhibit, contest in Victorias honor sugar icons

The City of Victorias commemorated the significant contribution of sugar industry icons with the “Hinun-an: Kalamayan Art Exhibit and Competition 2023”, held at CityMall Victorias Dec. 17.

Themed “Commemorating the hardships, victories, victims, and heroes of the Sugar Industry”, the event featured talented Victoriahanon artists and creators, and showcased a diverse range of artworks that depict the profound impact of the sugar industry in society.

Entry No. 13 by Franky Dato-on was the champion, Joebert Soriano secured the second spot with Entry No. 11, and Bianca Mae De Juan, third place, for Entry No. 12.

John Lapore received the Baskog Victorias Art of Choice for Entry No. 18, Antonio Ricardo Nobleza was awarded the Victorias City Tourism Choice Award for Entry No. 10, and Sheila Marie Sabolbora was recognized with the Victoriahanons Choice Award for Entry No. 23.

Leah Divino-Samson and Dennis Valenciano, co-owners of White Space Gallery, along with Jay-R Delleva, a winner of the Shell Art Competition, were the distinguished judges at the event, the city said.

The exhibit and competition not only celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the City of Victorias but also served as a platform to recognize the resilience of the community in the face of challenges, it added.

The artworks on display vividly captured the essence of the sugar industry, paying tribute to the hardships, victories, and heroes of the industry.

The “Hinun-an: Kalamayan Art Exhibit and Competition 2023” succeeded in fostering creativity and camaraderie within the local community, reflecting the spirit of the Kalamayan Festival.

The City of Victorias said it will continue to uphold its commitment to promoting the arts and preserving the cultural legacy that defines its identity. ||
