The City of Kabankalan in Negros Occidental is not taking chances, despite having only four remaining COVID-19 active cases as of Jan. 7.

The city government has announced on its social media account that it suspended the holding of its traditional Sinulog Festival this year because of Covid 19 threat.

The cultural fair in the annual Sinulog Festival, like this one last year, has been cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis. The ‘Novenario’ masses, however, has been retained with a scaled-down observance until Jan. 17.  |  RBeltran Photo

The decision was made during a meeting between Sinulog Foundation headed by Demetrio Ruiz and Mayor Pedro Zayco on Jan. 6.

During the meeting, it was decided by the two groups to scrap the tribal competition at the Kabankalan City public plaza among the different barangays.

However, the Novenario Masses for the feast day of Señor Sto. Niño will continue at the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral until Jan. 17.

Zayco, along with the Diocese of Kabankalan, called on the faithful to strictly follow the health protocols when inside the church such as wearing of face mask, face shield, and observing physical distancing.

Kabankalan City has 523 confirmed cases, with 551 recoveries and eight deaths. – GB
