Malacañang announced this afternoon that June 28, a Wednesday, is a national holiday in line with the celebration of Eid’l Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.
“Following the 1444 Hijrah Islamic Lunar Calendar, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos has recommended that June 28 be declared a national holiday in observance of Eid’l Adha,” Proclamation No. 258, dated June 13 and made public this afternoon, said.
Signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, the proclamation said that Eid’l Adha is one of two greatest feasts of Islam being celebrated worldwide.
Like Eid’l Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, it is distinguished by the communal prayer at daybreak on its first day.
In Muslim communities, part of the meat is consumed by the family that makes the sacrificial offering of an animal, while the rest of the meat is distributed to the poor and the needy, the Presidential Communications Office said. “Thus, the event has been regarded as a festival of sharing.”/CGC
