In a heartwarming display of unity and support, hundreds gathered at SM City Bacolod March 30 to mark the staging of Happy Walk, the annual event that celebrates and raises awareness for individuals with Down syndrome.

Organized by the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines Inc. (DSAPI)-Bacolod Parent Support Group and SM Cares, this year’s event, on the theme “3,2,1 and Beyond”, brought together about 500 participants, including children and individuals with Down syndrome, their families, special education centers, therapy centers, schools, organizations, and advocates for inclusion.

In his message, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson reaffirmed the province’s commitment to advocating for persons with disabilities, recognizing, and accepting differences.

“Let us celebrate diversity and increase our inclusivity in Negros Occidental, and treat everyone with respect, dignity, and compassion,” Lacson stressed.

Councilor Celia Flor, on behalf of Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Benitez, emphasized the advocacy of the city government, which strongly promotes inclusion and empowerment for all sectors, especially for persons with disabilities.

The parade was a highlight of the event, starting with an energetic cheer and performance from NU Bacolod’s dance troupe Bulldogs on Beat. Accompanied by the CSA-B Kamighon Brass and Pop Band, the group rallied the crowd to an invigorating declaration that they were all for Down.

The group walked around the mall, exchanging happy greetings from shop personnel and mall goers.

Abilities – not disabilities – were showcased at the event, like this Hawaiian-themed performance from kids with Down syndrome.

SM Bacolod’s Happy Walk 2025 was part of a nationwide initiative promoting awareness, inclusion, and empowerment for individuals with Down syndrome, its press release said, adding that similar events took place simultaneously at SMX Manila and SM City Cebu, fostering a collective movement towards a more inclusive society.

The success of this year’s Happy Walk underscores the community’s commitment to celebrating diversity and advocating for the rights and recognition of individuals with Down syndrome. ||
