Ten houses were swept by flood waters in Sitio Medina, Barangay Rizal, San Carlos City following torrential rains Saturday afternoon.

A report from City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said 672 households were affected by the flood five barangays.

Some 123 families from Barangays 1, 5 and Rizal were transferred to the nearest evacuation center due to waist-high flood, while others waited for the water to subside for hours, the CDRRMO said.

Joe Alingasa, CDRRMO head, said the downpour started 5 p.m. Saturday in the city proper.  Heavy to torrential rains were also experienced in the upland barangays of Rizal, Prosperidad and Punao causing sudden rise of water level in portions of Barangays 1, 2, 5 and 6 in the city proper.

Uprooted or felled trees blocked the main road, obstructing vehicles traveling to and from the city.

The CDRRMO deployed rescue teams in coastal communities as well as those near major waterways to check on reported soil erosion along the Andoon River bank in Barangay Rizal.

Seven evacuation centers were opened by the local government unit.

As of late Sunday afternoon, 82 families were still  at Medina Elementary School, 16 at Greenville Elementary School, 10 at the Barangay 4 Health Center, 9 at Ramon Magsaysay ES, four families at Barrio Fiesta Center Mall, and two families at Santo Tomas Villanueva-Recoletos, a report of the CDDRMO showed.

Food assistance were provided by the barangay and augmented by the City Social Welfare Development Office since Saturday night up to Sunday.

The seven families whose houses were swept by the flood remained at the Medina ES.

The city government is planning to relocate them and will not allow them to rebuild their houses in the area since they were already advised by their barangay officials to vacate because of the national government program of clearing the waterways.

They will also receive financial assistance from the city government, the CDRRMO head added.

Aside from the CDRRMO teams the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection also deployed their rescue units to the affected barangays. – MML
