The Environmental Management Bureau-Negros Island Region (EMB-NIR) conducted a writeshop on the Ten-Year Solid Waste Management Plan (TYSWMP) and orientation on the National Plan of Action in the Prevention, Reduction and Management of Marine Litter, held in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

The event brought together local government units (LGUs), whose approved TYSWMPs are due for updating, to assist them in revising and enhancing their TYSWMPs for continued compliance with Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000, while incorporating current policies, emerging waste management concerns, and strategies to address marine litter.

In her welcome message, Engr. Cristina Ruth Desuyo, OIC chief of the Environmental Monitoring and Enforcement Division, emphasized the importance of proactive planning and sustained commitment among LGUs in achieving effective and sustainable solid waste management.

She noted that updated and responsive waste management plans are essential in addressing growing environmental challenges, and improving the delivery of waste management services at the local level.

The writeshop provided participants with technical guidance on the preparation of their updated plans, including key compliance requirements and planning considerations, the EMB-NIR said.

It also featured discussions on marine litter management, highlighting the role of local governments in preventing waste leakage into rivers, coastlines, and marine ecosystems, it added.

Through the activity, EMB-NIR reinforced its commitment to supporting LGUs in developing practical, compliant, and sustainable solid waste management programs that contribute to cleaner communities and a healthier environment. ||
