Three pediatric deaths were logged in Bacolod due to dengue complications, as of the third week of August, the City Health Office (CHO) reported Sept. 3.
Data from the CHO and the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital show pediatric fatalities in barangays Granada, Mansilingan, and Villamonte.
A five-year-old female from Barangay Granada died Aug. 19, with admission diagnosis of dengue fever with warning signs, and immediate cause of death listed as acute respiratory failure resulting from pulmonary hemorrhage.
On Aug. 21, a four-year-old female from Barangay Mansilingan passed away after being admitted a day before with severe dengue.
Hospital records state the cause of death as multi-organ dysfunction syndrome involving hematologic, renal, and pulmonary systems, alongside cardiogenic shock.
An eight-year-old female from Barangay Villamonte was also listed among the fatalities. She was admitted July 4 and died the following day.
Dr. Grace Tan, head of the CHO Environment and Sanitation Division, said Sept. 3 that patients experiencing fever must be given sufficient fluids, particularly Oresol, to safeguard them from developing severe dengue.
“Our fight against dengue should be at the household level. We have to do the cleanup drive and the 4Ts: taob (turn upside down), taktak (shake off), tuyo (dry), and takip (cover), as well as search and destroy the breeding places of mosquitoes both inside and outside the home. We really need to help one another,” Tan stressed.
The CHO reported 448 cumulative dengue cases across the highly-urbanized city since the start of the year until Aug. 22.
Highest case counts by barangay include Mansilingan with 54 cases, Handumanan – 45, Estefania – 40, Singcang – 30, Banago – 29, Alijis – 28, Villamonte and Granada with 24 cases each, and Tangub with 22.
For the same period in 2025, the CHO logged 754 cases with five deaths. | TMD
