Latlat, an 11-month-old dog, is now in stable condition with improved appetite after she was struck with a metal rod while sleeping in Purok San Roque, Barangay Tangub, Bacolod City Aug. 14.

A neighbor allegedly hit Latlat, believing that she ate their chicken.

Juan Veterinary Clinic veterinarian Aaron Pabalan Jr. said Aug. 17 that Latlat sustained a ruptured cornea. “We are trying to stabilize and repair the wound in her right eye as her other eye is still functional.”

Latlat, found to be six to seven weeks pregnant, will remain at the clinic for treatment and observation.

Pabalan said they also received 10 cases of similar animal cruelty this year. “Cruelty is not limited to physical harm alone; cruelty is also the failure to provide proper food, proper shelter, and the proper needs of the animals.”

In a statement, the Bacolod City Veterinary Office emphasizes that violence against animals will not be tolerated.

“The office continues to encourage the public to report incidents of animal cruelty through the proper authorities, and allow the appropriate offices to investigate and take necessary action,” it said, adding that Latlat’s case is being investigated.

Tangub punong barangay Noli Villarosa said they are still looking for Latlat’s attacker, adding the suspect had previously reported to the barangay about the large number of street dogs in the area. | TMD
