The Department of Education has reported a drop of about 43,000 in the number of enrollees in Negros Occidental for school year 2023-2024, compared to last school year.

Citing records of the DepEd Western Visayas, provincial DepEd spokesperson Ian Arnold Arnaez said Friday that there was a reduction in the number of enrollees in Negros Occidental, from 337,000 last year, to an estimated 294,000 this school year, or a drop of 13 percent.

Arnaez said he believes that migration and delayed enrolment of young learners were among the reasons for the lower number of enrollees.

He, however, said that public schools in the province will continue to accommodate late enrollees in the next two months.

Because of flooding in several towns and cities of Negros Occidental due to enhanced southwest monsoon triggered by the recent Super Typhoon Goring, the scheduled opening of classes on Aug. 29 was moved two to three days later.

In Bacolod City, the start of classes in public elementary and high schools will be on Sept. 4.

Arnaez reported that 37 schools in Binalbagan, Moises Padilla, Pontevedra, Murcia, Pulupandan, San Enrique, and Valladolid have been flooded./GB
