Due to inclement weather brought about by the effects of Tropical Storm Leon, face-to-face classes in all levels in 74 schools in Cauayan, Negros Occidental were suspended on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
Mayor John Rey Tabujara said that they observed heavy rains in the coastal areas as early as 6 a.m.
“This is to prevent students from being stranded due to flooding that may happen,” the mayor said.
Ian Arnold Arnaez, spokesman of the Department of Education-Negros Occidental Schools Division, said that classes shifted to modular learning so that school days will not be affected.
Leon (international name Kong-Rey) has intensified into a typhoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph, the state weather bureau said Tuesday.
The typhoon was located 555 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
Leon is forecast to bring gusty winds in Visayas, Bataan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Camiguin. | GB
